It's the least glamorous and most valuable thing you can do in advertising.
How it works
You change one element. Just one. Different headline, different image, different CTA, different landing page layout. Everything else stays the same. Both versions run at the same time to similar audiences, and you compare results after enough data comes in.
If Version A gets a 1.2% CTR and Version B gets a 1.8%, Version B wins. Ship it, and test the next thing.
Why one variable at a time matters
This is where most people mess up. They change the headline AND the image AND the CTA all at once. Version B outperforms Version A, great. But which change actually made the difference? You have no idea.
Testing one variable at a time is slower. It's also the only way to actually learn something useful. If you need to test multiple elements at once, that's called multivariate testing, and it requires a lot more traffic to reach meaningful conclusions.
What to test (in priority order)
Some elements have outsized impact on performance:

How long to run a test
You need statistical significance, not just a gut feeling. Rules of thumb:
- Aim for at least 1,000 impressions per variation before looking at CTR.
- For conversion-focused tests, you want 50–100 conversions per variation.
- Most ad tests need 5–14 days to produce reliable results.
- Don't call a winner after 24 hours. Early data is noisy.
Ending a test too early is one of the most common mistakes in performance marketing. A variation that's "winning" after 200 impressions is just noise. Wait for the data to stabilize.

A/B testing doesn't feel dramatic in the moment. A 0.3% CTR improvement here, a 10% conversion rate bump there. But these small wins compound across your entire funnel.
